Disaster Relief for All

This is my interpretation of recent events. I feel this aid could be and should be applied not to those who are victims of nature but of man as well. Regardless of ones opinions, we should remember that over 100,000 people have died since the US has "helped" Iraq. Why are we trying to solve problems with bombs?

What I have learned from the horrible events of the tsunami is we need to stop fighting among our selves and help each other over come natural and man-made disasters.

The reason I put Iran on a letter is because the US stated they would send aid when they had their earthquake a year or so ago. They have yet to see any funds from the US. I would like to see the US take action by keeping their word and helping those in need.

Peace, love and hope to all,
Emily

I am really interested in why the tsunami has thrown people into such a panic, when there are so many other horrors going on every day. It's wonderful that people got involved and gave money, but why for this particular event and not others?

And yes, the horror that we have killed almost as many people in Iraq and nobody seems to care.

Thank you, Jingles. I wanted this piece to have a couple of meanings in it and not be too obvious as well.

Leontine,
I find this interesting as well. I wonder if it has to do with religious perspective. In the Christian belief, there is the book of Revelations and I wonder if people truly think it is the end of the world on one hand.

Also, I think that peoples faith, in general, is being questioned. I noticed a number of blogs talking about why would God allow this, etc.

On another level, I do think people are very upset about the Iraq war and the arrogance of the US. Responding to the people who were effected by the tsunami is one that can be done with aid and to go there immediately and help. In Iraq, one cannot go there freely and help. Obviously, the problems in Iraq is very complicated and dangerous.

I believe our response is based on this sorrow, guilt and fear especially from the Iraq war. It appears to be an easier problem to solve, in that respect.

Thank you for responding.

Iraq isn't the greatest comparison, because you're right - it is a MUCH more complicated problem? But there are certainly other disasters, such as famine and genocide in Africa, the AIDS epidemic there, etc., where what needs to be done is obvious and easy, but there just isn't any money. Because nobody takes an interest.

Have you seen Hotel Rwanda? I think it is having seen that movie, and the difference between our total abandonment of those people (800,000 dead because no one intervened), and our frantic need to Do Something in Asia that is making me insane.

I haven't seen the film Hotel Rwanda...but the little I know, it's beyond words. I agree there is the ability to help so much, really, especially with AIDS and we have Bush cutting off aid to these places on some crazy idea about womens rights. It's very frustrating.

I'll check out that film in a little while. I don't want to get more depressed than I already am. :) I just finished reading Atonement by Ian McEwan and it has to deal with war and suffering...so I'm trying to balance that with lighter works at the moment. It's maddening...thank the Gods for art, family and understanding people. :-)
Peace,
Emily
